Honor Israel teaches on Cultivating the Resilience Mindset

Published

on

Honor Israel is a Lagos based Leadership coach and the founder of The Art of Innovative Leadership. In his once a week free coaching sessions on his whatsapp group, he teaches on how to develop the resilience mindset.

I’m writing this article from my bed, using a torch for visibility, reflecting on my perspectives on resilience. Robert T. Kiyosaki, in his book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, highlights that what separates successful rich people from others is often referred to as gut, boldness, courage, grit, or what I prefer to call resilience for the purpose of this article. Kiyosaki shared an interview he had with a radio presenter about becoming an entrepreneur. He advised her to take courses in sales, direct selling, or copywriting, or to take a job in advertising to develop the necessary skills for entrepreneurship. The presenter misunderstood the advice, seeing it as a deviation from her belief in being a professional writer. This highlights that resilience is crucial for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs are charting unknown territories infested with challenges. Leaving the comfort of the corporate world to establish your own venture means competing in a highly competitive market where unconventional methods may be necessary for survival. So, what is resilience?

Language is a powerful tool to drive the world.

What is Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to persist and not give up in the face of adversity. It is about staying on course even when faced with setbacks, losses, distress, or external interference. As an entrepreneur, your sphere of influence is often limited, and you must navigate an external environment filled with challenges from vendors, suppliers, applicants, regulators, and more. Resilience is not just a skill; it is a mindset cultivated through life experiences, reflection, strategic thinking, and a strong support system.

How to Develop the Resilience Mindset

1. Life Experiences
Resilience is learned through adversity. For example, Kiyosaki notes that learning how to manage setbacks is crucial to building wealth and success. This idea is supported by Angela Duckworth in her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, where she explains that grit (which aligns closely with resilience) is often developed through difficult experiences. These experiences provide the context to understand and apply theoretical knowledge in practical ways.

2. Reflection
Resilience involves self-awareness, often developed through reflection. This aligns with the teachings of Viktor Frankl in Man’s Search for Meaning, where he emphasizes the importance of finding purpose in life’s struggles. Reflection helps clarify goals and values, allowing individuals to draw strength from their experiences and maintain focus on their long-term objectives.

3. Strategic Thinking
Resilience also involves strategic thinking, or what I prefer to call unconventional thinking. Entrepreneurs often have to think outside the box and find innovative solutions to problems. As outlined in Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, resilience involves using both intuitive and deliberate thinking to navigate challenges effectively.

4. Support System
A strong support system is essential for resilience. Brené Brown, in her book Daring Greatly, discusses the importance of vulnerability and seeking help. Building a support network during times of adversity is not a sign of weakness but a critical component of resilience.

5. Clarity
Adversity often brings clarity to one’s goals and values. Stephen Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,  emphasizes the importance of beginning with the end in mind. Resilient people use challenging experiences as opportunities to refocus and align their actions with their long-term vision.

How to Overcome Life Setbacks by Honor Israel

Published

on

By

Setbacks are an inevitable part of the human experience. Whether in personal life, career, or business, everyone faces challenges that can derail their progress. One of the primary reasons people face setbacks is a lack of understanding of their life purpose or goals. Many people drift through life, engaging in various activities without truly grasping what will give meaning to their existence. Another significant reason is a faulty perspective or mindset, which, while beneficial in certain areas, may hinder success in others. For instance, a person might excel in business but struggle with personal relationships due to their outlook on life. This article explores the causes of setbacks and provides practical strategies to overcome them, supported by real-life examples.

1. *Lack of Life Purpose*

A key reason for setbacks is the absence of a clear life purpose. When people do not have a defined direction, they are more likely to engage in activities that do not align with their true goals, leading to repeated failures. This lack of clarity often results in individuals taking on projects solely for survival or financial gain, rather than for fulfillment or growth. For instance, someone might pursue a high-paying job that does not resonate with their passions, ultimately leading to dissatisfaction and burnout.

*Example:* Steve Jobs famously said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” His early setback at Apple, where he was ousted from the company he co-founded, was partly due to a lack of alignment between his vision and the company’s direction at that time. However, his clear sense of purpose—his passion for innovation and design—led him to create new ventures, which ultimately brought him back to Apple and resulted in some of the most groundbreaking products in history.

In Simon Sinek’s book, *Start with Why*, emphasizes the importance of understanding your “why”—the core belief that drives everything you do. Sinek argues that knowing your purpose is essential for long-term success and resilience in the face of setbacks.

2. *Faulty Perspective or Mindset*

Another cause of setbacks is a faulty perspective or mindset. This is particularly evident when an individual’s approach to life works well in one area but fails in another. For example, a person who is highly successful in business may struggle in personal relationships because their competitive or transactional mindset does not translate well into social or emotional contexts.

*Example:* A successful entrepreneur might apply the same aggressive tactics that worked in business to their personal life, leading to strained relationships. The story of Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, illustrates this point. Schultz is known for his relentless drive and high expectations in business, but he has also spoken publicly about the personal toll this took on his relationships and family life.

Carol Dweck’s book, *Mindset: The New Psychology of Success*, explores the idea that adopting a growth mindset—believing that abilities can be developed through hard work and learning—can transform how we approach challenges and setbacks.

Overcoming Setbacks

To overcome setbacks, it is essential to develop a clear understanding of your life purpose and align your actions with this purpose. Here are practical steps to achieve this:

Realize Mistakes are Inevitable: Accept that mistakes are a part of life, but avoid making the same mistakes repeatedly. This requires reflection and learning from past experiences.

Get Clear Direction of Life Purpose: Through introspection and reflection, determine what truly matters to you. Once you have identified your life purpose, stay committed to it despite challenges.

Develop Spiritual Faculties: Cultivate a deep connection with your inner self through spiritual practices. This can include reading books on spirituality, meditating, or interpreting your dreams. The goal is to develop your intuition and inner guidance rather than relying solely on external counsel.

Stay Focused on Your Goals: Avoid distractions that promise immediate rewards but deviate from your core purpose. Focus on long-term fulfillment rather than short-term gains.

Prepare for Opposition: Understand that opposition and criticism are part of the journey. Use these challenges to strengthen your resolve and keep your focus on the possibilities ahead.

*Example:* The story of J.K. Rowling, author of the *Harry Potter* series, is a powerful example of overcoming setbacks. After facing numerous rejections from publishers, Rowling remained committed to her purpose of telling her story. Her persistence and belief in her vision eventually led to unprecedented success.

Napoleon Hill’s *Think and Grow Rich* discusses the importance of persistence and faith in achieving success. Hill argues that setbacks are opportunities for growth, and a strong belief in one’s purpose is crucial for overcoming challenges.

Key Insights

1. *Purpose-Driven Life:* Aligning your actions with your life purpose is essential for overcoming setbacks and achieving long-term success.

2. *Growth Mindset:* Adopting a growth mindset allows you to view setbacks as opportunities for learning and development rather than as failures.

3. *Spiritual Development:* Cultivating your spiritual faculties can provide inner guidance and resilience in the face of challenges.

4. *Focus and Persistence:* Staying focused on your goals and being persistent in the face of opposition are key to turning setbacks into stepping stones.

5. Power of Imagination and Words: Visualizing your success and consistently speaking your goals into reality can help manifest your dreams.

By understanding the root causes of setbacks and implementing these strategies, you can overcome obstacles and move closer to fulfilling your life purpose. Remember, setbacks are not the end of the road but rather opportunities to recalibrate and forge ahead with renewed clarity and strength.

A Nigerian investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, has disclosed how an International Non-governmental Organisation (INGO) offered him N800,000 to blackmail the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery.

Hundeyin, in a series of tweets on Saturday, explained that his decision to make it public was to send a message to the external interests working on the same path as those within the country who are determined to counteract the interests of half a billion West Africans.

According to him, the INGO, which he described as Dialogue Earth, wanted to contract him into blackmailing the refinery as dangerous to the environment.

He said, “Last week, I received an N800,000 offer from an international NGO called Dialogue Earth (formerly known as China Dialogue Trust) to write an article essentially saying that Dangote Refinery is terrible for the environment because something something “Environmental Concerns,” something something “Climate Change,” something something “Energy Transition Policy,” something something “COP 28.”

“The (unstated but clearly implied) thrust of the brief was for a prominent local voice to put their name on an article that is an argument or a premise for the Nigerian government to kill the refinery based on its “energy transition commitments” and “environmental policy.” This conclusion wasn’t immediately apparent when they reached out to me, but I suspected where it was heading, and I quickly accepted the offer so that I could see the brief and obtain hard evidence. I’ve attached screenshots from the brief below.”
